More Information
Celadon refers to a range of green glazes, primarily those that resemble jade in color. One of the earliest glazes in China, green glaze was first discovered in the Shang dynasty and was predominant from the Eastern Han dynasty until the thirteenth century. The three main types of celadon wares are Longquan (Lung-ch’uan), Yaozhou, and Yue. The Davis Museum collections contain a number of celadon vessels made at the Longquan kiln, renowned for the refinement of jade-like colors, including the bowl with a dragon pattern on view.
