Moche artists of the North Coast used molds to produce ceramics on an enormous scale, which were distributed across a wide region. Elegant slip drawings cover the flat surface of some vessels; others are sculptural, and include some of the most naturalistic representations of people and animals ever created in the ancient Andes. Many reference symbolic narratives or particular religious beliefs: the sea lion vessel, for example, refers to a ritual hunt in the cold Pacific waters. The masterful Y-shaped spout, which resembles an inverted stirrup, is characteristic of the North Coast, including later Chimu blackware.
