More Information
The ancient civilizations of the U.S. Southwest were culturally distinct from the more urban civilizations that existed in what is now central Mexico, with whom they were indirectly connected via complex trade routes. Ceramic techniques were introduced from present-day Mexico around 300 C.E., and potters eventually developed original styles. Puebloan artists in central Arizona emphasized abstract designs that are thought to reference natural forces, like water or lightning. The black-on-white ceramics found in graves in the Mimbres Valley of southwestern New Mexico often feature figurative decoration, such as the bird in midflight seen here.
