More InformationThe Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC) in Boston, the first of its kind in America, was founded in 1897. Born out of the ideologies of John Ruskin and William Morris of the Arts and Crafts movement in England, SAC strove to bring this new and distinctive design aesthetic and reformist mission to the general public. The movement promoted the idea that the commonly undervalued genre of handicrafts could play an essential role in a modern industrial society. The Society advanced the Arts and Crafts effort to reclaim the beauty of everyday objects and the integrity of their materials. Metalsmithing was a particularly key activity in the Society, a third of whose membership comprised metalworkers, jewelers, and enamelers.
