More InformationThe tradition of blue-and-white ware extends back to the Tang dynasty, but the highly acclaimed blue-and-white porcelain exported to the West began in the Yuan period. The first types of blue-and-white ware used a white slip to cover the ceramic vessel before the blue decoration was painted. In blue-and-white porcelain, however, cobalt glaze is painted directly on the white body of the clay, then covered with a clear overglaze.
