More Information
The complex geometric patterns on this small wooden box reflect a Kuba aesthetic that encompasses basketry, raffia textiles, beadwork, and architecture. The central snake motif serves as both a symbolic decoration and a lid handle. Although its exact meaning is lost, it may reference a royal family with a snake emblem or proverbs featuring snakes. This box would have held a red cosmetic paste called twool—some residue is still visible. Made from camwood powder and palm oil, twool beautified and moisturized the skin, and it could also be used to dye textiles.
